What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT?
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT is a powerful tool that has been used for a variety of mental health and addiction disorders. It is both safe and effective and has its core focus on Mindfulness. This type of therapy takes a cognitive approach to life and experience in a way that is both Non-judgmental and Healing. By practicing throughout your stay with us, you will gain valuable insights into who you are and why you do the things you do. In order to better understand this type of therapy, lets take a look at the key components of DBT.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy consists of four groups:
- Emotion Regulation
- Distress Tolerance
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
During your stay at LifeSync, you will have an immersive experience in each of the four aspects of DBT. Optimally, each of these components flow seamlessly from one to another in practice. A real strength of this therapy is that it meets you at the place you are at and gently and lovingly brings you forward; allowing you to grow at your own pace. We start out by learning each of these aspects of the therapy. Toward the end of your stay, we will work with you to start to integrate all four aspects of the therapy.
There is a lot of literature in the scientific community in psychology that shows how this treatment modality is beneficial in developing healthy coping mechanisms and more fulfilling interpersonal relationships.
What does it mean to be aware? How do you cope with change, conflict, or your emotions? Are you reactive or do you say things you don’t mean? Do you wish you were able to hit the pause button? We all do at times. However, when you are suffering from substance abuse and dual diagnosis, it’s really hard to gain awareness. Sometimes, when things get really bad, it’s really hard to know where to start with so many things running through your mind. At LifeSync Malibu our expert clinical team will help you slow down that racing roller coaster of thought and help you create space between your thoughts and actions. The beauty of mindfulness is that it gives you the awareness to make good, healthy choices.
This one is pretty self-explanatory and it is a direct off shoot of mindfulness. It’s a great tool for coping with toxic thoughts, severe feelings and emotional pain and just plain old good decision making. If you’ve ever let your anger get the better of you, this module is for you. It will help you to see how emotions sometimes hold us hostage and what we can do to start constructively coping with our emotional lives.
Similar to Emotion Regulation, the Distress Tolerance module will help you get through those tough moments when you just want to run. Its strength is that in this module, you will learn how to take an honest look at some of the deeper seeded problems you are having. This is especially good for those problems that you’ve run up against over and over but haven’t been able to resolve. This part of your programming will give you the tools you need to claim victory over these old hurts and hang ups.
The final component is all about communication and relation. A lot of times our clients have a hard time opening up or sharing without a drink or a drug in their system. As you go through your healing process at LifeSync, we will help you learn that not only is it ok to open up, its way better! We will help you learn skills and strengths so that you can start the healing process with your friends and family.
In short, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a multimodal therapeutic intervention that works really well for people with substance use disorders and/or mental health issues. It may sound like a lot, but our highly-trained staff will walk you through it every step of the way.
