Residential Drug and Alcohol Rehab at LifeSync
When approaching the addiction recovery journey it is helpful to have an understanding of the different levels of care available. These refer to the intensity of the program and how it relates to the severity of the individual’s substance use disorder. While outpatient programs are an excellent option for emerging or mild substance use disorders, someone with a moderate to severe chemical dependency or addiction would benefit most from a residential rehab program.
LifeSync Malibu offers a comprehensive residential treatment program providing 24-hour client support. Residential programming offers multiple evidence-based therapies and recovery classes and activities that are designed to work together in an integrated manner. Residing at the treatment center for a specified period of time helps the individual focus on making fundamental changes to their routines and behaviors. Over the course of treatment, the individual will learn new coping skills and thought patterns that will propel them toward achieving sustained wellness.
Medically Managed Detox
One of the many benefits of selecting a residential rehab over an outpatient program is the convenience of undergoing the detox process on the premises. This first step of recovery assists the individual as they progress through the stages of detox while under the supervision of medically trained detox professionals. Withdrawal symptoms can be uncomfortable and sometimes unpredictable. The medical detox team is trained to monitor vital signs and to intervene immediately if an urgent health event emerges.
In a medical detox the individual will experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms that range from mild to severe, based on the substance abuse history. These withdrawal symptoms indicate the central nervous system and brain chemistry is attempting to stabilize in the absence of the substance. The medical detox team provides ongoing medical interventions to help ease the symptoms. Additionally, psychological support is provided throughout the detox process.
What to Expect in Residential Treatment
Individual Psychotherapy Sessions
Getting to the root issues that may underlie a chemical dependency is crucial if the recovery is to be sustained over the long term. Past trauma, abuse, grief and loss, deep-seated emotional pain, and many other factors can drive substance abuse as a means of self-medicating. Therapy helps the person identify the core issues and work through them.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT is a short-term therapy that assists the individual in identifying self-defeating negative thoughts or thought distortions, which have driven impulsive substance seeking behaviors. By shifting the self-talk toward positive, affirming messaging, more productive behaviors will follow.
Group Therapy
Peer interaction and support is an integral element of the recovery process. Group therapy sessions help clients engage and share their personal stories while providing social support and accountability. A therapist guides the group in discussing topics that encourage sharing and opportunities to learn from one another.
Family Group
Because the family is such an essential source of support it is helpful to enlist their involvement in a loved one’s treatment. Healing past pains, broken trust bonds, and dysfunctional communication habits can help family members move forward in support of their loved one.
Psychosocial Education
Classes help individuals in treatment identify dysfunctional patterns that inhibit wellness, and teach them how to modify them. These new recovery tools might include improved communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, emotion regulation, and defining relapse prevention strategies.
12-Step Programming
Participating in 12-step programs such as A.A. or N.A. provides a framework for improving behavior patterns and interpersonal relationships, as well as being a source of social support.
Extracurricular Activities
To round out the residential rehabilitation experience, an array of complementary activities is provided. These might include yoga, gym, hiking, cycling, mindfulness meditation, and field trips.
Aftercare Activities Following Residential Treatment
After leaving the residential program it can sometimes be difficult to adjust to a different lifestyle in recovery. Recovery is a dynamic and evolving process occurring over time, and therefore requires ongoing effort along the way. By participating in aftercare services the chances of enjoying a sustained recovery are greatly improved. These include:
Outpatient Therapy
Having access to psychotherapy and group support is essential in early recovery. These sources of ongoing support are invaluable when encountering a rough patch on the recovery journey, and can help reduce the risk of relapse.
Sober Living
Not everyone has a solid support base at home, which can undermine the work accomplished in recovery. For some, spending a few months adjusting to sobriety in a sober living environment offers peer support and camaraderie within a substance-free living space.
Recovery Community
Engaging in a supportive recovery community adds an additional layer of protection against relapse. Whether it is an A.A. or N.A. group, SMART Recovery, or any similar recovery community, participation offers socializing and fellowship, as well as volunteer opportunities.
Medical Detox
Safe detoxification in a private and healing environment. Each client is closely monitored and prescribed the appropriate medication to help reduce any potential for seizures and to reduce withdrawal symptoms.
